Manual Enrollment

Our integration with PeopleSoft takes care of all official enrollment transactions related to students, including drops, but you can still manually enroll another user (student or faculty).

NOTE: The enrollment status for manually enrolled users must be changed manually and will not be changed based on any changes in the user's official enrollment status (i.e., a "Wait_listed" user will not be changed to "Student" if the student officially enrolls in the class; nor will that user be removed from a D2L course offering if the student does not officially enroll in the class).
  • On the Classlist page, click Add Participants and then click on Add an existing user
  • Type a name or username into the search box and click the Search button
Note: A user already enrolled in your course offering will not appear on the search results page.
  • Click in the check box to select the correct user and assign a role in your course offering:
    • Student
    • Instructor
    • TA-Grader has access to the grades tool and can assign grades
    • TA- Discuss has access to the discussion tool and can create forums and topics
    • Leader - this role has the same privileges as an Instructor and is for club and organization accounts
    • Member - this role has the same privileges as a Student and is for club and organization accounts
    • Wait_listed - this role has the same privileges as a Student and is there to remind you that this user is not officially enrolled in your class (you can remove or change this user's role once the student's status is resolved)
  • For course accounts, a manually enrolled user must be assigned to a section (this does not apply to club and organization accounts)
  • Click the Enroll Selected Users button. Note that there is an option to send an enrollment email.

View Student List by Class of Enrollment

In a course offering that has multiple courses grouped together, it is easy to view students by class of enrollment. This is especially useful when submitting grades at the end of the semester, as the online grades and rosters system only allows us to submit grades for one class at a time.

User Progress

Desire2Learn automatically records a variety of data on activity associated with its various tools. In general, this data can be accessed from three areas:

  1. The tool itself (e.g., View Reports for the Content tool)
  2. Each student's View Progress link from the Classlist
  3. The View User Progress link on the Edit Course page

Who Can See a Particular Content Module or Topic?

If you use release conditions to plan an individualized learning path through your course content, you can see which topics a particular student can see by viewing that student's progress report:
  • On the Classlist, click on the Progress Report icon () for a student.
  • Click the Change button and choose the Content tool and click Apply.

  • The page shows a list of all content modules and topics - a closed eye next to a module/topic name indicates that particular student cannot see that particular module or topic

Personal Expression for Users

image of user menu on minibar.Users can add a photo and links to various social networking tools via the Profile. This is accessed from the My Home page as well as from the user menu on the minibar.

Whatever information users provide on the Edit My User Profile page is visible to other users by clicking on the images on the classlist. In addition to a picture, the options include a nickname (note that this does not connect to the user's personal information in PeopleSoft and thus is not a good place to indicate a preferred name) and a tagline. Also there can be links to the user's profiles on Facebook, Google, Twitter, and/or LinkedIn. No other personal links can be added, and any URL added to the Tagline field is not live.

Emailing All Students

To send an email to all students enrolled in a class, go to the Classlist and click the button labeled "Email everyone on this tab."

A new browser window will open with an email message addressed to all users on the tab. You may decide to move the addresses from the To: field to the Bcc: field. Fill in a subject, type a message, and click the Send button. A copy of the message will be sent to the person initiating the call.

What is the Last Date of Attendance?

D2L's user progress can be used to document a student's last date of attendance (the last date they accessed your course offering). This is linked () from each student on the classlist. The User Progress page includes a pull-down menu to look at detailed statistics in several areas (content, discussions, quizzes, etc.) but all of the pages include a Login Summary table that displays the last date and time the student accessed the course offering.

View Multiple Student Profiles

The profile/image link on the Classlist page are HTML links (not JavaScript), which means you can right-click on their image and open each profile in a new window or tab. They won't all be on the same page, but you can have them all open at the same time.

Using the No Access Role

There is a role that can be assigned called No Access. A user with that role is visible on the classlist and can see the course offering on a "No Access" tab on the My Courses widget. However, when that user tries to enter the course all that will be visible is a blank course homepage. [VIDEO DEMO]

Student access to classlist

On the classlist students are only able to see people enrolled in the same section, which is why a student taking a lab / lecture class cannot see classmates enrolled in other labs. There are a couple of workarounds for instructors who want students to be able to contact each other online:
  • Create a separate document (content topic – new file is the best way) that has all students and their email addresses listed. It will not have the automatic connection to D2L’s send email tool but it will facilitate communication.
  • Another option is to create a discussion topic for students to introduce themselves. All students enrolled in a course offering can see all messages on a topic, and from there they can email each other using D2L’s send email tool.

View a course offering as a student via the Instructor-student role

You can view a course offering as if you were a student without logging out by switching your role within the course offering to Instructor-student. This role has the same privileges as the Student role with one exception: Users enrolled as instructor-student can switch themselves back to the Instructor role.

While enrolled as Instructor-student, you can take quizzes, view content, submit files to dropbox folders, etc., as if you were a student. All of your activity is recorded as if you were a student. You will not be able to see any course material that is hidden from students, including items that are restricted by date and by release condition.

This is a change that must be done via the Classlist, not the Role Switch widget. [VIDEO DEMO]

Email issues

Sending email works best when it is used from the classlist, as the email tool has options that might be confusing. From the email tool, the address book has people from across the district who have no connection to the user (i.e., they are not classmates or instructors for that student). From the classlist, a user can select an individual or group of individuals to send an email to.
